Richard
Fulkerson, a skilled early American cooper, exemplified the pioneering
spirit of Fulkerson families who settled the beautiful Shenandoah
Valley of Virginia, the rugged new frontiers of Ohio, Indiana and
Illinois. Richard's sons were apprenticed to their father and practiced
the art of fine barrelmaking in the family tradition. Grandsons and
great-grandsons practiced a variety of skilled trades, most of which
have died with modern technology. Among the Fulkerson artisans were
blacksmiths, glassblowers and portrait painters. The heritage of Richard
Fulkerson can be clearly seen in many of his descendants who share
a pioneering spirit, an independence of thought, and noted artistic
talent.
