Benjamin Fulkerson - Son of the American Revolution, Patriot and Pioneer
September 10, 1770 - November 11, 1818

Benjamin Fulkerson was the brother of Richard Fulkerson (1765-1847). The first record we have of Benjamin is December 12,1801, when he married Mary Ann Moore, daughter of John Moore, in Shenandoah County, Virginia. Mary was the sister of Clarinda Moore who married Richard.

In December 1803, Benjamin purchased land from Andrew Moore, brother of Mary Ann and Clarinda. When this land is later sold, in 1809 to Jacob Miller, it is described as land which passed from John Moore to Andrew Moore. For the next three years, Benjamin is repeatedly listed on the Rockingham County, Va., tax rolls for paying tax on his horse.

On July 13, 1807, Benjamin bought a tract of land on the northwest side of the north fork of the Shenandoah River, paying for it 100 British pounds. One border of the land was on the dividing line between Rockingham and Shenandoah Counties. The sellers were John Brock and his wife, Ann, of Rockingham County. They had purchased the land from Alexander Tunis Quick who became the close neighbor of Benjamin and Mary. Interestingly, Tunis, as he was called, would become their brother-in-law. On Nov. 18, 1811, Tunis Quick married Madeline Moore, sister of Clarinda, Mary Ann and Andrew.

The following April, Benjamin and Mary paid “to John Brock 500 pounds and further sum of one dollar." Benjamin was described as "bound to said John Brock in the sum of 500 pounds. This payment removed the indenture on the tract of land which was said to contain 160.5 acres.

On March 27,1813, Benjamin and Mary Ann sold to John Roller of Rockingham County a tract of 167.5 acres for the sum of 1300 pounds. This was the same tract of land they had purchased from John Brock. Mary signed with an "X."

After this sale of land, Benjamin and Mary moved west to Ohio, probably taking a flatboat much the same as his brother, Richard, would take when he and Clarinda moved there. On October 7, 1814, Benjamin purchased 49.5 acres of land in Liberty Township, Butler County, Ohio, for $1,000 from James Murphy. On August 6, 1816, Benjamin purchased 40 acres for $500 from William Conklin. On September 13, 1818, he purchased 30 acres for $200 from James Hough.

On Nov. 11, 1818, Benjamin wrote his last will and testament. "Being of low health, but sound in mind," he mentioned his wife, Mary, and his children as follows: Leppe, Hiram, Betsy Ann, Epperson and Stella. On Nov. 19, probate action was begun on the estate of Benjamin Fulkerson, deceased.
